Q&A on Homeowners’ Insurance Snow Coverage

posted by Stephen Katz @ 5:18 PM
Wednesday, February 23, 2011

In the aftermath of January and February snowstorms, homeowners are urged to check their homeowners’ and vehicle insurance policies to be sure they are protected against property damage caused by the harsh weather. These questions are a good place to start:  Q: What kind of storm damage is covered on the outside of your house?

A: Regular homeowners’ policies include protection  for wind, snow and rain damage to the outside of a home, as well as damage caused by a structure’s collapse because of the accumulation of snow.

Q: If ice buildup on my roof caused a leak that got into my ceiling on the inside of my house. Am I covered?

A: Interior water damage to a home is usually NOT covered unless the exterior of the home is damaged from a covered accident. However, if interior water damage occurs as a result of missing shingles, that would be covered.

Q: Would damage caused by freezing pipes be covered?

A: Some policies cover damage from frozen pipes, as long as the damage is not a result of the homeowner’s failure to keep the home adequately heated. So keep those pipes insulated and water dripping on deep freeze nights.

Q: Is there a standard type coverage for home and auto insurancpolicies when it comes to winter storm coverages?

A: Homeowners’ and auto policies provide basic protection, but some policies provide a broader range of coverages than others. Read yours carefully.
