10 Steps to Improve the Security of your Home

posted by Stephen Katz @ 12:51 PM

1. Assess your Home!

Take a look around your home, detecting spots as a burglar would. Address any issues that seem vulnerable.

2. Home Security Expert

Ask for recommendations from an expert of steps you can take to deter your home against crime, including the installation of an alarm system.

3. Exterior Lights

Install exterior lighting and include motion-detection among your options.

4. Automatic Light Timers

Install automatic light timers in the inside of your home.

5. Trim Trees and Shrubbery

Overgrown foliage around the home can conceal burglars trying to enter through your windows or doors.

6. Check your Doors and Frames

They should be solidly constructed and secure. A person shouldn’t be able to easily knock down your door to gain entry.

7. Secure Doors and Windows

Make sure they are closed and securely fastened when not in use. Even when you are at home, get in the habit of keeping them latched and closed when possible. Make sure sliding glass doors are properly secured by placing a rod in the track.

8. Locksmith

Inspect your locks. A reputable locksmith will check to make sure they are in good working order and provide the best protection options against entry.

9. Mail and Newspaper Delivery

When you are out of town have your mail held at the post office or have a neighbor or friend pick up the mail and/or newspapers.

10. Never Hide Keys!

Don’t hide keys under rocks, doormats or around the outside of your home.
